HKFYG Hong Kong Melody Makers is known for its refreshing a cappella voices as well as innovative and breathtaking performances. We are committed to bringing joy to the community by singing. Our members are not only a group of young talented musicians with great voices, but also a group of friends who share a passion for music and singing. Please come and join us!
Applicants must fulfill the below requirements:
l Be aged between 16 and 30
l Be able to sight-read music
l Have at least three years choral experience
l Be able to play a musical instrument, or be well versed in another branch of performing arts
We expect members to be sincere and whole-hearted in joining, with full, enthusiastic participation and commitment.
Applicants are required to record an unaccompanied extract of a pop song (incl. 1 verse and 1 chorus part), of 1min max, in any key. The recording shall demonstrate vocal capability of the applicant.
Selected applicants will be invited to attend an audition, which will further help the audition panel in evaluating and deciding whether the applicant is qualified to be admitted as a member.
HKFYG Hong Kong Melody Makers stresses the importance of members’ sincerity towards performing arts, and that is why newly admitted members will be required to undergo a probation period. Their confirmed membership will be at the discretion of the Manager upon the completion of the first concert that they participate in.
HKFYG Hong Kong Melody Makers is one of the most active and popular a cappella group in Hong Kong. Members have the opportunities to participate in many different occasions. Apart from making appearances on radio and television, we frequently take part in various performances of the community. Our numerous activities include:
l Concerts – With a strong commitment to community service, HKFYG Hong Kong Melody Makers organizes different kinds of concerts regularly. The group also collaborates with different performing arts groups and international masters.
l Special invited performances – Opportunities for such performances are extensive. The choir is often invited to perform at different functions and events of various public and charity organizations.
l International experiences – As a “Music Ambassador” of Hong Kong, the group is often invited to travel to Mainland China and overseas to participate in different activities, such as music festivals and cultural exchange programmes.
l Supplementary training – Members will be trained in dancing, acting and other theatrical techniques, in order to develop their artistic abilities.
HKFYG Hong Kong Melody Makers performs a wide variety of musical genres and styles, with emphasis on a cappella. We fully support local compositions, and frequently premiere newly commissioned works by local composers. So far, we have commissioned almost a hundred arrangements and original works, including an original musical as well as numerous theatre works.
HKFYG Hong Kong Melody Makers take steps beyond the formal restraints of conventional choral singing. Our performances are not merely singing, but are enriched by different acting, choreographed performance or witty dialogue.
HKFYG Hong Kong Melody Makers consists of several a cappella vocal bands performing in small groups. These vocal bands offer members with opportunities to perform music in a lighter and more modern style. Their repertoires include vocal jazz, pop and folk songs.
Regular rehearsals of the HKFYG Hong Kong Melody Makers are held every Thursday from 7pm to 10pm at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Members are expected to attend every rehearsal. To attain the best musical standards, members will be asked to study the scores and practice the pieces thoroughly before they come to the weekly rehearsals.
Members are expected to commit fully to the HKFYG Hong Kong Melody Makers. Individual member’s performances will be regularly reviewed and evaluated. Renewal of the annual membership is based on the following criteria:
l 80% attendance or more at all activities throughout the year
l Possession of good musicianship
l Demonstration of the etiquette of a performer
l No misconduct or intentional violation of rules set by the group
